Nokia leads dual-SIM mobile phone market in India: Report

Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia is making a comeback in the low-end segment in India after taking a beating from the local brands. The recent rupee depreciation compelled the Indian phone brands to hike the price of low-end models, thereby losing the market grip. Nokia not only made a comeback in the low-end segment but has also gained a remarkable lead in the dual-SIM phones segment. According to a media research, multi-SIM shipments accounted 54 per cent of the total handsets market during November 2011 in the country. Nokia is leading the race with 19 per cent market share, followed by Micromax (7.1 per cent) and Karbonn (6.9 per cent).

Summary

Contrary to what the general opinion suggests, the upgrades are significant. While the dual core processor may not give the illusion of the extra power when compared to the 4 in most usage scenarios, but the moment you open HD games, you know what you have spent the extra money for! The only thing that disappoints - you will have to specify to people that you are using a 4S and not the older 4. It is a bundle of magnificence, but does come dressed in old clothes, and costs quite a bit.

What was an atmosphere of anticipation soon turned into one of mass disappointment, accompanied by a lot of swearing. Instead of the iPhone 5, Apple announced the launch of the iPhone 4S. Which is a rehashed version of the iPhone 4. For the most part!

Look & Feel

The single biggest reason for the groans of disappointment is mostly because the 4S looks so much like the previous iPhone. Not that it is a bad thing at all, considering the solid build and comfortable to hold design. What it does is doesn’t really offer that stand out-ish feel. Two people side by side, one using an iPhone 4 and the other is using an iPhone 4S - yet you wont be able to make out the difference.

Summary

What Samsung have managed to package together is a dual core processor, and a lot of other goodies in an unbelievably slim and light form factor. While the plasticky feel is a bit of a disappaointment, the performance on offer will simply blow you away. For anyone who does a lot of gaming on the smartphone, or want a powerful phone, the S II may just be phone for you. If you have Rs 32,890 to spend at this moment, we suggest you order it right away. This is slightly on the expensive side at the moment, and you may choose to wait and watch what happens with the prices in the next month or so. Alternatively, the LG Optimus 2X is also worth checking out, if you want a dual core powered phone which costs a bit less.

After the superb Galaxy S, Samsung has their job pretty much cut out, as far as making the successor is concerned. After having warmed up with the Nexus S smartphone (Read review here), Samsung were in form when it came to putting together the Samsung Galaxy S II. And no doubt they needed to be in top form, since the Galaxy S II is one of the very first dual core processor powered smartphones, and needs to compete with the dual core phone from the Korean rivals, LG the Optimus 2X. We were impressed with the performance offered by the Optimus 2X (Read review here), but felt that it was a little understated in terms of the punch offered by the dual core processor, and it felt big and heavy to hold, use and carry. While we know it’s a dual core, but it feels like an HTC Incredible S (Read review here) or the Samsung Nexus S (Read review here), in most usage scenarios.

The LG Optimus 2X offered a lot of power, but it seemed hidden most of the time! Which is why we were looking forward to seeing how the slightly more power will respond on the Galaxy S II.


Look and feel: Surprisingly slim, unbelievably light.
Admittedly, the Samsung Galaxy S II surprised us with its extremely slim form factor and the fact that it is the lightest of all Android smartphones we have tested recently, albeit by quite a margin. The likes of the Samsung Google Nexus S and the HTC Incredible S are heavier by quite some margin. However, let us not forget that the HTC Incredible S did have a stronger body, and so did the Google Nexus S. No wonder the S II has even piped the extremely sleek Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc by 1 gram!

McAfee software bug could turn customers' PCs into spam servers

Anti-virus software maker McAfee warned that a flaw in one of its products could make customers' PCs vulnerable to attacks in which hackers used their computers to distribute spam.

The company, which is a unit of chipmaker Intel Corp, disclosed the flaw in a message to customers on its website Wednesday. McAfee spokesman Ian Bain said t least one customer had fallen victim to such an attack, which leveraged a flaw in a service offering known as McAfee SaaS for Total Protection.

RIM to launch two new PlayBook tablets this year

Samsung announces Series 5 Ultrabooks, and refreshed Series 9 laptops

Samsung has announced the new generation of Series 9 laptops at CES 2012, super slim 15-inch and 13.3-inch models that fit in the Ultrabook category. The company is not calling them Ultrabooks however, instead, has released two other laptops – the 13-inch and 14-inch Samsung Series 5 Ultrabooks.

The new Samsung Series 9 notebooks are a lot more compact than the first generation Series 9, with 13-inch model measuring in at 13mm thick, and weighing in at 1.1kg, while the 15-inch weighs 1.6 kgs, and measures 15mm in thickness. Samsung says over 33,000 hours of research have gone into designing the two models. The Series 9 is contained in what Samsung calls an ultraslim, aluminium single shell body. The shell has also been sand-blasted for fingerprint resistance.

IBPS Common Exam 2012 for recruitment of Specialist Officer

The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) has announced the common entrance exam 2012 for the post of Specialist Officers.

The common entrance exam is applicable for various positions in 19 public sector banks.

Prospective candidates who wish to appear for the CWE will have to apply to IBPS and should carefully read the advertisement regarding eligibility criteria, online registration process, pattern of examination, issuance of call letters and score cards.

Candidates can apply online only from December 30, 2011 to January 21, 2012.

The date of the written exam has been tentatively fixed for March 11, 2012(Sunday). However, the final date of examination shall be intimated in the call letter along with the centre/venue address.

All eligible candidates should download their call letter and information handout from the IBPS's website www.ibps.in by entering their registration number and password/date of birth, after February 28, 2012. No hard copy of the call letter/information handout will be sent by post.
